Directions to the Meeting

The goal was straightforward - develop and deliver educational programming to inmates and ex-offenders. But what began as an assignment to teach became a learning experience on a variety of levels.

The first level comprised an in-depth journey into a world that few of us understand or contemplate - incarceration, rehabilitation and its current and future impact on the all of us.

Second is the expanding technological model for content delivery to multiple audiences. Finally, there is an emerging market paradigm for distribution of original content to a wider, global market.

Documentary filmmakers Dennis Nobile and Vince Wright will discuss the production process of capturing the elusive reality of prison life and the struggle to stay clean, straight and sober. They will also screen some of the more compelling footage from the programming.

Julian Chiabella, Acquisitions Manager for the Films Media Group in Princeton, will discuss how his company - the largest distributor of non-theatrical and educational media in North America - saw a need for this content to reach a wider audience in schools, colleges, and libraries.

About the Speakers

- Since 2001, Julian Chiabella, has been Acquisitions Manager at Films Media Group, screening a wide variety of video content from producers around the planet. He attends major international industry conferences, including NATPE, and MIPTV and MIPCOM in Cannes FR to view programs and negotiate for the rights packages needed by FMG for the educational marketplace.

Prior to joining FMG, Julian had 18 years in key development and marketing roles with various public television stations, including WHYY [Philadelphia], WPBT [Miami], Maryland Public Broadcasting, and New Jersey Public Television. He also had his own consulting firm, AMG Inc, serving the program development and marketing needs of public television and the independent producer community.

- Award-winning writer, producer, and director, Dennis Nobile, is president of nth degree media in Plainsboro, NJ. Dennis develops projects for the advertising, public relations, corporate, medical and documentary fields. He found the year he spent working with inmates, ex-offenders and corrections officials one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences in his professional life.

- Emmy Award-winning writer, producer, director and host, Vince Wright, has worked on everything from training and corporate video productions in the 1980's to advertisements and nationally syndicated commercial broadcast television shows, including “Boxing Illustrated,” local News for UPN-TV57, and for an NJEA public affairs series in the late 1990's called CLASSROOM CLOSE-UP, NJ. He is also a published automotive still photographer for several periodicals, including PERFORMANCE RACING INDUSTRY magazine.

Vince is currently a content/program producer & host for NJN Public Television & Radio in the Workforce Development department. This department has been funded solely by the New Jersey Department of Labor (NJDOL). This technology-intensive partnership initiative with NJN was created as a pilot project in the year 2000 called the New Jersey Workplace Literacy Program. It has since evolved into what is now called the Workforce Learning Link (WLL) program ( www.njn.net/workforce ). The WLL provides computer and television technology tools and content, primarily to the NJDOL's ( www.state.nj.us/labor  ) statewide One Stop Career Center system, that encourages and enables New Jersey citizens who are unemployed to enter or re-enter the workforce and ultimately to achieve economic self-sufficiency through a holistic approach that addresses all aspects of the participant’s lives.
